ACS Assessment Pathways

The Australian Computer Society is the governing body for information and communication technology. It assesses potential migrants for employment in Australia’s nominated occupation.

Application Types

Here are four application types are available for Australian migration

ACS Application pathways

1. Temporary Graduate

Graduates who have achieved an Australian Bachelor’s degree or above are eligible for the Temporary Graduate route. This is a skills evaluation for qualifications only, and it may only be used to apply for a subclass 485 visa.

2. Post-Australian Study 

The Post Australian Study track is for graduates with a Bachelor’s degree or higher from Australia who want a skill evaluation for migration purposes in general. It is necessary to have relevant ICT experience or to have completed an ACS Professional Year program.

3. Skills Assessment

It is a generic skills assessment application for determining tertiary ICT degrees and employment in ICT.

4. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning is a process that assesses the skills of individuals who do not come from an ICT background. The Australian Computer Society is the organization that carries out this assessment.

Visas Category

You might need a skills assessment if you apply for the following visas and streams:

Visa Category for Australian Migration

1. General Skilled Migration (GSM) Visas

Applicants for the following GSM visas that are subject to a points test must have a sufficient skills evaluation for the specified occupation:

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) — Points-tested stream
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 489) — Invited Pathway
  • Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 491)

You must have specified an occupation on the appropriate skilled occupation list for that visa subclass to be asked to apply for a points-based visa.

You must show evidence of a satisfactory skills assessment for your selected occupation when submitting your visa application. By the time you are invited to apply, you must have completed a skills assessment.

Your skills evaluation must be current at the time you are asked to apply for a points-based visa. The following formula is used to compute validity periods:

  • A skills assessment is valid for three years from the issue date if no validity period is specified.
  • If a skills assessment’s validity period is less than three years, the assessment is valid for the period stated on the assessment.
  • If the validity period stated on a skills assessment is longer than three years, the assessment is valid for three years from the assessment date.
  • It is recommended that you schedule your skills assessment well in advance of submitting your Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect. You can’t trust a skills evaluation you got after you were asked to apply.

You may also have different types of assessments conducted by different skills assessing authorities. Each type of assessment is different and has its criteria.

A provisional skills assessment issued for a subclass 485 visa application is unsuitable for a Points-tested visa application.

2. Employer-Sponsored visas

Employer-sponsored visas enable Australian businesses to sponsor certain qualified workers to meet their needs. It also permits foreign skilled personal to find job opportunities with Australian companies where their talents are required.

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) 

If you are applying under the Temporary Residence transition or the Labour Agreement streams, you do not need a skills assessment at the time of application. However, if you are applying under the Direct Entry entry stream, you will need one before working.

You must provide the skills assessment results before applying for a visa, and the results must be obtained before the date when the visa application is made.

If the assessment does not specify an expiration date, it will be valid for three years from its date. If the date has passed beyond three years, the visa application will no longer be valid.

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187)

If you are applying under the Temporary Resident Transition program, a skills assessment is NOT required at the time of application. However, if the decision-maker asks you to do so, then a skills assessment is still required if they think it’s necessary.

You must have obtained the results of your skills assessment before the date of your visa interview. If the results of your assessment show an expiry date, it will no longer be valid.

If the assessment does not specify an expiration date, it will be valid for three years. If more than three years have passed since the assessment date, it will no longer be valid.

3. Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS)

Some main TSS visa candidates must complete a required skills assessment as part of the visa application process.

When submitting your visa application, complete these steps:

  • Check if a necessary skills assessment is required or if you qualify for an exemption, Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482).
  • Before you submit, you must start or finish a skills evaluation within the next three years.
  • To prevent processing delays, give the skills assessment reference number.
  • If you qualify for an exemption, show proof of it.

Note: We may request a skills assessment as part of the application process, even if it is not required. We shall make a written request when this is the case.

4. Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)

You must have nominated an occupation on the MLTSSL to be eligible for a Temporary Workstream visa. We only accept assessments that are issued by the relevant authority.

You must provide evidence that you have been at least assessed to support your visa application. If the assessment is not valid, it will not be considered valid for the last three years.

Costs and Processing Times

The skills evaluation takes about 8-10 weeks to complete. However, if ACS requires extra papers, the processing period may be longer than usual.

Recognition of Prior Learning 

Recognition of Prior Learning is a process that assesses the skills of individuals who do not come from an ICT background. The Australian Computer Society is the organization that carries out this assessment.

This section is for candidates who do not have the necessary academic background to match the requirements for an ICT degree. Having the necessary skills and experience makes them well-equipped to handle the tasks and responsibilities of an ACS project.

Here are the two categories for RPL. They are:

In the first category, Those with a relevant degree but not enough content to show in the report form. These individuals need to have six years of relevant work experience to be considered for the position.

In the second category, those who do not have tertiary education can only apply if they show additional two years of working experience. These individuals need to have eight years of relevant work experience to be considered for the position.

Before you can apply for skilled migration to Australia, you need to follow the guidelines set by the country’s immigration agency.

Even if you do not have a tertiary degree, you can still apply for the skills assessment if you have at least six years of related work experience in Australia.

Work Experience Required for ACS Skill Assessment

Work experience is an essential part of skill assessment for Australian migration.

  • Work Experience necessary to fulfill the eligibility requirements in all circumstances above is not considered “Skilled Employment” and is not eligible for points under the Skilled Migration Points Test.
  • The Work Experience requirement of 10 years is based on the previous ten years from your online Skills Application submission date.
  • All Work Experience must be in the field of ICT and must be for at least 20 hours per week.
  • Proof of payment is required for every Work Experience.
  • Provide employment reference letter.
  • Work experience will be regarded post-qualification for all purposes (research work based on a thesis or volunteer work will not be considered).

Documents Requirement for ACS:

Documents proving your identity, educational qualifications, and work experience will be requested.

The accuracy of the facts provided in your Tasks & Duties / Work Reference letter might determine the outcome of your whole Skills Assessment (s). The following information must be included in all letters:

  • Start and end dates of employment
  • Designation / Position
  • Description of duties
  • Description of earlier roles duties
  • Hours worked per week
  • On Company letterhead
  • Signed by an authorized person in the organization

An Applicant may not produce a Work Reference letter from an employer owing to the employer’s unwillingness to give the letter, the firm discontinuing operations, or other circumstances.

ACS accepts a Statutory Declaration or an Affidavit in such situations. On the other hand, the Applicant would have to explain why they are unable to provide an Employment Reference letter.
